From the Preface: It is our experience that while teachers seek to comprehend the biology main lesson, Rudolf Steiner’s indication for this curriculum is not always entirely clear to them. About a year ago, the Curriculum Group opened discussions on this issue, which led to an investigation of the biology main lesson in the hopes of working towards greater clarity. What we are presenting here is not fully formed. There is data that needs refining and some material could be presented in greater depth. There might be valid alternatives to what we are presenting, and we welcome suggestions.

What is important to us is the careful consideration of Rudolf Steiner’s curriculum indication. What was his central idea? What was it that he intended to be recognized and developed? What concepts and connections are to be developed? And what are the concrete facts that allow us to develop these concepts?
Two of the authors have taught the main lesson as presented here in various forms three different times. The material and its sequence of presentation were tracked and found to be useful. The methodology that is presented in the following chapters was implemented in these presentations. Cognitive aims that transcend facts, are the fruits of teaching and research.
