This book is suitable for a sixth grade level introduction to ancient history. It contains short biographies on the first seven kings of Rome, some heroes of the Republic, and other aspects of Roman life up through the time of Christ, to Constantine and the decline of Rome. Included is a selection from Vergil's Aeneid and a short play about the founding of Rome written by 6th grade students.

Roman Lives was written for the class teacher. Author, Dorothy Harrer tells of different men, a shorter list selected as examples of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. She also devotes most of the book to stories of various aspects of Roman life at different times, and includes stories of the Christians under Rome and the later clash between Constantine and Julian the Apostate.
